The New Face of Geylang Serai - Singapore 2009

Geylang Serai has changed a lot much more than you ever thought. Alas, I've come back for my new post after missing for several months...due to tight schedules meeting overseas friends and travelled across the Asian countries.
As you can see the left image; I introduce you the new face of Geylang Serai, not forgeting the background new apartments available for the lucky ones who own them.
Geylang Serai is now elevated with several storeys; occupying several shops ranging from textiles, boutique dresses, scarves and assorted malay traditional clothing etc. That's the second floor level. You can fill up your tummy when you feel hungry at this floor too; it's at the left corner from this view.. and that's the food court area.
The wet and dry markets occupy the lower level of this new structured building..

Geylang Serai - Before the Facelift.

This was what Geylang Serai looked like before it's tramsformation in 2009. What inspires me is the name Geylang Serai existed before I was even born.I believe many old timers, whether local or abroad, who used to visit this place could relate something important about it's existence besides the old market concept, the kopitiam, the cinema - Panggung SINGAPURA, the JOO CHIAT COMPLEX and etc. Have you ever been to Geylang Serai- Singapore? More than you know,to me, Geylang Serai is one of the Singapore Historical Landmark that brought great memories in my life, being a Malay, and in a Malay Community.

GEYLANG SERAI - Before Transformation.

Geylang Sipaku Geylang...An old folk song I used to sing when I was a child in primary and lower secondary levels in school. The song could easily be remembered as it reflects my 'Growing Up' years with my late parents and relatives.Sweet memories were uncountable when we came to this place, many times.

Geylang Serai is my historical, treasure site; A LIVING LEGEND where tourists should visit when they are in SINGAPORE. When you ask some Malaysian Senior Citizens or Bruneians, not to forget Indonesians,I believe those people who used to come to Geylang Serai do notice it's unique existence. What more can you say during the month of Ramadan, MUSLIM fasting month...the BAZAARs have lots of things to offer...you name it and search for it.Many 'Hari Raya' settings and decorations were done up. If you wish to see what's up at Geylang at night ,just visit this place to know more about the happenings.

When I got my second job as a Set Designer, I was introduced to my spouce who was a Geylang Serai Resident, once upon a time; an idle person who grew up in this area until he married me.
Last but not least..Who says that Geylang is not important...Without the old image, new image is not easily recognized.Cheers!
